This is why when I purchase or sell, I request that fish be put the fish in a cooler or rubber maid or I put it in a the same when selling. Then AC or battery air pumps can be used and fresh water may be added at any point.
Also, this way I or the purchaser may see whether the fish is active, to thin or any other possible malady. If I find that the fish is not up to my standard I wouldn't hand the cash over.
With that being said no need to fast a fish for 7 days, 2 is sufficient. Personally I would give the cash back.

And you have kept fish for 38 yrs, I would not have thought you were even close to 38. :D

Thank you for the tip.I actually brought an air pump and sponge filter from the tank so i put the other 3 fish i bought from him in the bucket with the pump and the fish were all breathing great when i got home.I will request the seller brings them in a bucket next time so i can examine them,Great advise.

thank you for the compliment.

I'd bet that the fish died from shock or lack of oxygen vs. starvation.

There should be no problem in fasting a large, predatory fish for a week. In fact, it's better to err on the side of fasting longer than too short (polluting the water).

As an example, for the fish I showed at the ACA, I fasted them for 3 days (M-W) prior to driving (for 8 hrs) to Cinci...did not feed them while they were on display at the show (Thurs-Sun)...and drove them back home (8 hrs on Sun). I fed them on Mon AM. And these were neither large fish...or predators.

That said, if the fish in question was dead shortly after he brought it to you...he should refund your money or provide you with a comparable fish. It's just the right thing to do.

FYI jess i had two perfectly healthy discus die from being transported to me and they were in big feeders bags and only in for a few hours, when it gets hot it can really change the dissolved oxygen levels fast. so i feel your pain, i have not go refunded yet either. my loss is deffinitely not as much as yours though

Sorry about the bad experience, I think you should get your money back.

The dream story would be he would just refund you, he would love to do so and you'd both be happy.

But realistically this is kinda how the game goes with selling/transporting fish. It sucks. I don't know that there's anyway to make sure both sides get a fair shake in a case like this.

I understand your desire to not BLAST or BASH this guy but can you tell us who he is? We don't want to become victims.

Well the problem is this guy is looked at highly here and said he has never had a complaint or problem before. If i mentioned his name i bet the answers would have been different.

I think if you're not leaving anything out, and this persons reputation is perfect, I think the only thing you can do is let everyone know who it was. A) The person will deal with people not wanting to do business, B) He might realize that you are right.

Wow so sorry you got screwed just hope none of us get screwed by the same guy! I also give you props for being much nicer then some of us would be about the situation.
