Right way to put your immersed heater?

I think Hagen goofed when they made the instructions for the aquaclear heaters. It seems like they made generic packaging for submersible and non-submersible heaters, so if you go by their instructions, the control dial should be above water. I believe there's even a marking on the heater that shows where the minimum water level should be. It kinda defeats the purpose of a SUBMERSIBLE heater, doesn't it? Maybe this is where your friend got that idea.

Just do as everyone else is suggesting and make sure it's in an area with good water movement and you'll be fine.

for all those who lay the heaters horizontally near the gravel, have you ever experienced a fish being burnt by it or do you use a heater protector? I have so I don't lay it horizontally anymore.
I lay my heater in my 55 gallon horizontal and I haven't experienced any heater burn from my fish although I have heard quiet a few people having problems with it, mostly with rays or other bottom dwellers. My senegal sometimes swims to sit on the heater or tries to squeeze in between the heater and the tank wall, knock on wood, no burns.
