Hi all, i think i have decided what to go for with the new tank when i build soon, a brackish set up, mangrove, now the tank is going to be 9 foot l x 3 foot d x 28 inch h, water depth 24 . Ply/GRP construction.

I am thinking 14mm glass will be fine as the top edge of the window will not be supported the 8 foot length of the window.

Any thoughts please.

thanks

Just so I understand correctly, you are planning plywood on three sides, the front will have a brace on the sides and bottom of the viewing window but not the top?

With an 8' span and that large of a volume I would really consider going somewhere around 19mm just to be safe. If the top was going to be braced I think 14mm would be fine, but I'd be worried with it being open.

Thats it, braced 3 sides of the window only., i will have to phone around for 19mm glass, max thickness i could find was 16mm.

thanks for the reply ;)

You might be able to pull off 16mm, I just like to be cautious. I had a rimless glass tank that was 24" tall make out of 14mm, however it was only 30" long so covering a much smaller span. Pressure wise 14mm will probably work but 8' of span will bow on it's own without water behind it.

Don't cheap out go with 19 mm. I am a cheap person but If I was building this it is not at all where I would try to save money. It will be the weakest point of the tank. If you think of it this way, you build the plywood part of the tank as ridged as possible and the buy 14mm glass and expect the silicone to stretch as the glass bows that will be your weak point

Hi Miller, yes i agree, by all means i dont want to cheap out on it, just dont want to go over the top when not needed and still not so thin it has a very low SF. Like when building any tank, no point in building a 4x2x2 in 14mm.

I called a few places yesterday and i am waiting for a reply back to see if they can get it in 19mm, going to call a few more today.

Managed to get a few prices, at first i was shocked at them as three was over £400 for a 8x2 19mm slab, or i could of got a 15mm thick and toughened for the same at £440.
Best price was £214 for a 8x2 19mm, so i am happy with that.

on with the build :)

This is refreshing to hear....someone planning and spending on proper material.
Good building fellow MFKer!!
