Rio Grande 500 Gal educational tank. Questions and discussion thread

That looks great! I do agree less species of plants make for a more natural tank. I will definitely get java ferns, anubias, and maybe some swords (the tank may be too deep). With the java fern, did you go out and buy a lot of them or did they start producing 'babies' that grew around the tank?

I love those 3d backgrounds! However this tank can be seen from all 4 sides - full length and two windows on each side of the width.

Best lights for growing these plants and how many too? There are three light fixtures above the tank and each has one t8 philips hi-vision bulb. Should I only replace the middle fixture with a, ZOO MED FLORA SUN lamp for example, bulb or just the two outside ones or do I need to ask for the funds to replace all three? I would think two would be enough right?

Tank and fish look really great. Maybe try feeding some cut up shrimp or filets or get some frozen silversides. Possibly minnows from bait shop. These may look a little more natural as opposed to goldfish.

For plants you could try hornwort or elodea. I think they do well in lower temps and are nice and green.

Java fern will be fine with the present lighting, no doubt about it. Get as much as you can, like lep said. It is an extremely hardy plant. I add flourish with water changes, and then twice a week in small increments along with trace. Other than that, they require very minimal maintainance.

Great to know, thanks all! Right now I am planning on getting 3+ java ferns, 2 anubias, and 1 amazon sword to start off with. As well as 1 or 2 zoo med flora sun lights to replace 1 or 2 out of the 3 lights above the tank.

What would be the best location for these plants? Look wise?
