Rio Maica Severum (J. Rapps):

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I though they reminded me of those Tapajos red heads Rapps brought in a few years ago, except blue instead of green. I thought perhaps it might be a racial version of that fish, but the only reference of the Rio Maica I can find wouldn't drain into the Tapajos drainage, but the Mamore one. Though, if it's found in the Mamore, it might also be found in the Guapore river which I believe floods into the Tapajos basin via the Juruena much like the Negro floods into the Orinoco basin up north.

The main reason I bought them from Jeff a few years ago is because I'd seen the fish on a few European websites. When they grew out, they had red necks and 8 bars, just like rotkeils. From what I can see of these particular severums as adults, it looks as if they keep the heavy blue body color with a maroon nose/face (no red neck). No idea if the F1s will look like the parents -- sometimes F1s end up drastically different because of water quality, diet, and so on. I'd love to find out though. Hopefully someone bought a group to grow out and spawn. I didn't have the funds this time around thanks to being laid off briefly. :(

The ones I was thinking of didn't have the rotkeil type neck/shoulder area, just bright red over the bridge of the nose. I remember you getting them and they turned out more rotkeil like though.

Hopefully your lay off is only brief, sadly mine has been protracted thus far.

which size did you order from his list?

I asked Jeff what to expect from these as adults. he referred to his pics of Tapajos sevs, saying "Since the Maica is a tributary of the Tapajos, I can safely say that these are the same fish in terms of appearance and care.

The 'Tapajos' photos are taken of larger fish than offered on stock list."

This came from his larger size batch.
