They’re eating pellets, baby cichlids, gambusia, and Treefrog tadpoles basically they eat anything that hits the water.

75 gallon tank gets 3-4 inch water change every 2 days. Most of dorsal spots starting to show up…. Looks like another couple of fish are turning female in the favorable conditions.

tough tank to photograph due to glare but I’ll get some decent photos over the weekend. My big female is getting plumperband more colored up every day

The biggest females belly is staying to get cherry red- just the underside not up into her flanks. I doubt there’s a big enough male for her in the group however as she is the biggest fish by 1/2” or so

I had missed this thread.
Beautiful fish, growing very nicely!
Congrats on beautiful fish and obviously excellent care. I have had quite a few different fish but never pike cichlids.

Getting closer…. The level of violence in the tank is truly impressive. I’m going to to take 2 pikes out to make it easier for the pair to spawn. Female looks like she swallowed a chicken egg whole

Well these Rio Manay F0 proteus pikes spawned last night. I didn’t get to the tank early enough this morning to get good pictures in decent light but I took a few pictures of the pair. And the log they spawned in. Female just looks like a deflated balloon. Tube still down a little bit. The bummer is I’m about to take off for 1.5 months of fishing and hunting. No idea if there will be any fry still alive when I get back.

Still got about 150 of these down from about 500. They eat prepared food readily as well as eating each other. Easy to raise. Next spring this pair will go outside in a vat. They are less rheophilic than some pike species and are found in proximity to dense floating plant growth. Which is basically exactly the conditions the vat fish get.
