Hi guys,

I saw that my hoplias are more active when i switch off the filtration, dunno why, but when it s off, they swimm in the tank.
thereby i was wondering if the biotop where they come could explain why they are not active when the filtration is on .
I know that they come from the rio xingu, but rio xingu is big ..

I found some picture about the rio xingu biotop but dunno what to do ..

maybe some people know the rio xingu as well and would help me :)

also other question, how could i do to have the filtration on , but the hoplias wont feel it? because i tryed to use a cane breakthrough for the rejection of the pump but it seems to not work as well :s

hope u will understand me.. my eng sux :s

? my filtration doesnt produce oxygen, the contact between water and air is enough to provide oxygen for ur fish ..

when i talk about filtration, it s the biological filtration (hard to explain in english)

But well i dont realy understand ur question??

It could be possible to run the tank like alot of channa keepers do. Plant it with tons of VERY hardy and stiff plants and for biofiltration use a spongefilter or two. Problem would be mechanical filtration but if your wolf is on prepared foods and you feed him bite sized meals it shouldnt be too bad.

The mala could survive in a tank without filtration, but it's not ideal. I'd be curious to know if the reason he's more active with the filtration off is due to him going up for air, etc..

But i think it s the current ( dunno if the word is right ) of the filtration that make them unactive, not the filtration itself .

The fact that there is or there isnt filtration doesnt effect on the oxygen in the tank ..
When i talk about switch off filtration , i talk about thing like that :
http://www.swelluk.com/img/shop/original/aquarium-filtration-eheim-professional-external.jpg

which doesnt oxygen the water of u tank.

I dont have any things that produce oxygen ( dunno the name in eng) like on the picture : http://whoetbe.free.fr/aquarium/img/aquarium/bac2.jpg

it s unnecessary, and bad for the growth of ur plant..

I know you meant the current.

Yes the filter does oxygenate the air. The water exiting back into the tank will disrupt the surface of the water and this allows air into the water.

From what I can tell my mala is not concerned with the current. He's a nocturnal fish and does most of his swimming at night.

could be the current...
could also be that when the filter is off theres less oxygen and he swims up for air.
either way,it doesnt matter IMO as long as hes healthy.

??

i dont think it s a question of oxygen, because they just swim but sometime they don"t , it depends.. But when it s night , i switch off the filtration because the aquarium is in my room so i cant sleep with it.. so maybe the fact that when i switch off the filtration mean night, make them swim...

If it's at night they swim because they are nocturnal, I can almost guarantee it has nothing to do with the filtration being off. The only thing that will do is give the mala a bad environment to live in. If the filter is that loud get a canister filter that will be quiet or move the tank.
