i think a shotgun would do the job and then some it would be quick so thats good but that would blow its head right off
 
Man I'm so sorry...that's horrible. You did the right thing and don't let any of the self righteous tell you any different. IMO that fish would have died on his own from shock and stress alone in less than 24 hours. I've had fish die that were WAY less beat up than that even after separating them into the hospital tank.
