Found my female nic floating. Had her for only 6 years. But does she seem unusually big? I thought females got around 6" and males around this size to 10"?

From the picture she was 6", tails aren't usually counted in the measurement.

Idk anyone who doesn't count the tail in measurements. It's from from starting of mouth from end of tail. My Midas would be only 10" if he's tail wasn't included which was 5.5".

Sorry for your loss she could be egg bound

Some people count the tail (Total length = TL) and some people count only the body(Standard length = SL). Most people on here at least measure TL. Either way I am sorry for your loss. That fish though I am pretty sure is a male not a female. The first thing is females only grow about half the size of males(about 6in TL). While males will hit 10in. The other things is the color. Nics are fairly dimorphic. Below is a pic of my pair form some years ago (sorry not the best quality).

Notice how the female has a bright blue face and that vertical line going through its body. The male has the scale patterning on his body. This is typical of Costan Rican Nics. I think your fish was a very large beautiful male. Males TYPICALLY do not have such a bold vertical line. Mines was pretty faint but I believe it is much more prominent in the female. Either way sorry for your loss its hard losing a fish especially one you have had for some time. What was his tank setup like if you don't mind me asking?

Oh I always use TL lol. But I never count long flowing trailers. Some people are a stickeler about that though and really do not like TL measuring.

When you see max length of a fish on a website I'm pretty sure that's the standard length (no tail).

Yes most people count the tail, so when comparing with each other that's cool but when looking at a scientific document mentioning length that's the standard length.

Yeah I'm going on TL. The tail is just as much a part of the fish as the head, right lol?
The tank is a 150g and water parameters are good doing 2 50% water changes a week and fluval fx5 filter.
She never showed any signs of disease or parasites ever. She was perfectly healthy, eating and active.
Tank mates never bothered her, but she would have standoff w/ an a. Rostratus here and there. No fin damage or anything. Just this:
