Risky Business

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well no one mentioned power outage. That would mess up the lighting timers. Air pumps are above water level because siphons drain tanks. Yes, a check valve failed in my past. One lucky break for me is the weather now allowed me to unplug all the heaters. The summer temperatures inside will be near 80 F or 27 C. Evaporation will occur, do you ask people to top off the tank with tap water?

I generally prepare a minimum of food in the pre packaged amounts as everyone else has said.
Only enough for 1 or 2 feeds a week, not everyday, besides that i would never get anyone to do anything else.
If the power goes out you cant do anything even if you are home, if the light timers are out of sequence it wont really harm the fish, if the lights arent needed for plants then you can unplug them too i certainly wouldnt get anyone doing water changes or top ups, just do that when you get back. There is a very high chance a well meaning amateur will make things worse not better in 90% of the things that could go wrong.
Do a big water change a few days before you leave and then get some one to do 1 or 2 feeds a week, even that isnt necessary as jjohnwm jjohnwm siad, they will be fine for a few weeks.
I went on a 4 week holiday and had someone feed once a week, came back to no issues, keep it simple and les chance of things going wrong.

one time, I went on vacation and left automatic feeder on to feed fish every 2 hours. My parrot somehow got out of cage and ate all of the fish food from the feeder. When I came ba k all fish were still alive.

Thanks Waffles, but you don't know if the parrot got the food on day 1 or day 7.

With all those stories of people feeding their fish 2 and 3 times a day, and some even doing partial water changes every second day, and temperature controlled water changes to one tenth of one degree, maybe a few of us have compulsive disorders. Many of our fish come from tank raised parents and might be less adaptable to environmental changes. When bringing my extra angelfish to the LFS, they refused even free donations because "tank raised angelfish are too fragile." My opinion is not in agreement and we likely underestimate our fish. I'm leaning in agreement with jjohnwm and not fret the food. Maybe even forgo the Platy idea.
