Rita is coming to Houston

I'm far enough inland that I really don't have to worry -- check Mapquest.com for Temple, TX. It's about half way between Austin and Dallas in Central Texas, about an hour closer to Austin. A lot of schools are closing here tomorrow as a precaution in case the storm should sweep in faster than anticipated and/or there are tornadoes. My office will also be closed on Saturday, as will a lot of others. All we're expected to see here is really heavy rain.

I'm a little bit worried about you, Cab... If you do find a way to get out, or decide to make a break for it after all (Got any friends with a pilot's license?) just let me know. Like I said, we should be safe here, but we're not so far from your home that it will take you a long time to get back when the coast is clear.

yah before you guys get mad at me , look at the news. right now in my areas is ok thats y i m still have power but i know for sure 2morow is going to change. if you watch the news there is no more gas anywhere in houston, the freeways are jamed and ppl are getting sick. wen that storm comes they will suffer cause they are in their cars. I went to home depot and there is noting left no freaking generators. now i m looking at the news at it seems like is getting better. like I promised my friends I will be alright I will put everything in God's hands, but I will so promise you guys I will be fine, but I dont know about my fishes and tank but thats the least of my concerns right now.

it appears the storm is taking a shift towards the louisiana area. still too early to tell where it will end up, but it looks like we caught a small break in my part of town. anticipating some power outages but should not be as bad as earlier weather reports indicated. will keep an eye on it and hope for the best. spent a good portion of the day securing provisions and boarding up the house. no plywood in areas stores, but luckily managed to get enough from work to cover all my windows. live in nortwest side of houston in a non flooding zone. some relatives evacuated areas closer to the coast and joined me at my home.

Good luck to you all and remember that Houston is at least a little above sea level while New orleons is normally below sea level with only the levees between it and flooding even at the best of times. Please do the cardboard and tape thing on your windows and stay indoors if you can't evacuate.

Stay safe man. They keep jogging the track back and forth. Don't go out in the eye. In terms of your fish, you can add hydrogen peroxide every so often to the water to boost oxygen content. I'll check with Marc Weiss on the dosage later today. See if you can find a power inverter at a radio shack or something. When I lost power for a week during a blizzard, I kept my fish alive by using a few power inverters and a few different cars, starting them up every once in a while to make sure they didn't die. I lost all my plants due to the fact that the water got too cold, but didn't lose one fish. You say you've got relatives there, so I know you've got extra cars. Power inverters can save your ass!!!

Well, you are a lot further west than we are so hopefully you won't see as much of this storm. We are 200 miles almost directly north of Houston, so if the current projected path is right, the eye will come almost right over us. Yesterday it had turned more towards LA, but now it has come back in our direction.

Those of you staying in Houston--I understand your decision because of the situation on the interstates. My prayers will be with you.

I live in El Paso
today tons of people from houston arrived.
in the news paper it said all motels & hotels are booked NO VACANCY !!
thats a ton of people :WHOA:

El Paso is like 700 plus miles away from Houston
we're lucky to see 10 inchs of rain a year and we're
at 3500 feet above sea level!

I got tipped off by the LFS that they got in battery powered air pumps today. I made it there as fast as I could and got two big ones, some extra air hose, splitters, and a ton of batteries! This could really save my bacon!
