^ the chloramine filters using cartridges that you refill with carbon. the activated carbon goes for about $30 for a 5lb bag and each fill last several thousand gallons. they also sell carbon block filters which are a little better and last up to 20k gallons. these are about $16 each

I dont use the 2L bottles or anything marked as for pond use so was not aware any difference. I know my 500ml bottle for $12 lasts 5k gallons at suggested dosage. With an RO you gonna spend more than that on filters and end up with water that is less than ideal for most fish before even adding in the cost of all the wasted water.

I not sure of the cost of the chlorine replacement filters, but assume that is a much much better alternative than RO.

Yep, I know what you're saying..that bottle is what I pour my gallon jugs into to make life easier. If that bottle treats 5000g, a water change once a week on just the 450g (not including all my other tanks) would mean that bottle would last me 11 weeks if I don't over treat at all. Thats treating for the entire tank every water change and not just the water I replace.

When I first set up the 450g I was doing water changes 2-3 times a week to keep my nitrates low so I was going through a ton of prime.

jcardona1 - I think we're going through the same experiences with our setups. First it was the filter socks that I followed your lead on, now it looks like I'll be following your lead on this one as well. Whats your next project on your tank? haha.

LOL nice! after this it will be tank double the size :naughty: im really hoping this water changer gets my nitrates down. as even after doing a huge weekly water change my nitrates are still in the 80ppm range

Yep, I'm in the same boat. I pretty much gave up on the thought of nitrates below 40ppm, especially now that I'm not working from home anymore and don't have the time to do multiple weekly water changes.

My next project is a pond for my cats. :headbang2

coral life unit. Hate it :(

jcardona - thanks again for posting the perfect thread to help me out. I should have looked around more but was at work and didn't have time. I miss my days of working from home - it was so much easier to stay caught up with everything on this site then.

no problem, glad it helped. lucky for me i work at a computer all day so i can "multitask" LOL. ill be posting a new thread with pics and details of the setup once i get it going. be on the lookout :)
