Well i've been told that to do SW you should have an RO unit, and seeing as i have no idea how they work i should find that out before i rush out and buy one. Someone explain, please, how they work like do you just plug them in or do you have to have a whole plumbing job done to set them up?

They can be plugged onto a water source, and started up pretty quickly. You want to make sure you flush the membranes before initial use. A TDS meter, backflush unit, and quick adapters are all highly recommended. If you have a 40+ gallon tank, I'd recommend no smaller than a 100 gpd filter. RO/DI units will last longer, and produce purer water.

once you use ro u must put back into the water proper nutrients and elements .... and also use peat moss to keep your lower ph n hardness it gets messy and isnt for a begginer... depending on the type of species ro isnt always the way to go.... if your going to go all the way make sure you keep discus at one point

what does discus have to do with sw O.O

Well i was looking into sw too and started looking at ro units. I belive you hook it up to a flaucet and run the water and the ro unti removes the nutrients and imourities from it. like copper. I was looking into ro units from ebay there are some for like 65 + shipping 100gpd. good luck
