i forgot to say that all of my tanks are freshwater..

for several months before we bought an RO/DI system we bought water at one of those water stores down the street. the RO/DI system paid for itself in less than 6 months because i no longer had to pay for water that was safe for my fish.

I have both fresh and salt, but mostly fresh; and I have had to buy RO and Distilled water every time I can spare to, but the idea of consistently buying it seems a little silly knowing that it would be much cheaper just to go out and buy an RO Unit mysef; I mean, I'm not getting out of this hobby anytime soon so it would seem like a wise investment.

The water at this house is just unbearably bad, I am having an impossible time managing the water quality over here and I am an obsessive compulsive water changer and even with the huge amounts of maintanence I put into my tanks the ammonia levels are persistently riddiculous.

Morledzep; let's say if I were to buy the model you showed me right there, what all would I need for it? I live in an apartment so I am not sure if we have a garden hose, if there is one, I have yet to see it. Do I need a sink attachment or something? And a water quality tester of sorts?

you would need nothing else. the kit comes with everything you need to hook it up and start using it, you can set it up under the sink in the kitchen or where you can put a garden hose on it, all of the connections are there. they also make a 150 GPD set up that might be even better for your needs. i've been toying with the idea of buying it and setting it up in addition to the one i use in my kitchen so i can have a drip system on the big tank i'm setting up.

I belive you use an ro unit when using an automatic drip system on Fw tanks to avoid using prime. Could you imagine having to constantly prime.:nilly:
You could have an automatic prime system, although you'd also neeed an automatic money system to pay for it. :grinno:

That's awesome! :). Where would I buy the filters/DI Resin/RO Membranes when they need replacing?

from the same company that you buy the system from. they not only sell the refill kits on ebay, they also have a website that they sell the parts from directly (that's actually cheaper). the company's name is Filter Direct. They sell several different brands of filtration systems, i bought the Water General kit.

Hey man, thank you so much for your help I really appreciate it. My fiance went ahead and ordered me the 100 GPD for now and I am really looking forward to seeing how it improves the quality of my tanks! We have such issues with our tap water over here and I really think that this RO Unit is going to go a long way towards providing us with a solution :).

it made a big difference here.. that 100 gallon tank in the hallway doesn't smell of sewage anymore, and my fish are a lot healthier.

If you buy one of those ebay systems referenced above, buyer beware.

At a minimum, remove the DI cartridges from their clips and orient them vertically so that the flow goes from the bottom (of each) to the top. Horizontal DI cartridges are a fundamental configuration shortfall.

Those sytems come with a 100 gpd membrane, which under normal household line pressures typically have a rejection rate of about 90% - which means you will go through your DI resin faster than you would with a high rejection membrane. Think about this when you are deciding what membrane to get when the original membrane needs to be replaced.
