RO Vs tap

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes, it most certainly does.

RO is safe to use when you are using it in combination with your tap. Straight RO does not contain minerals necessary for fish to metabolize. Pure RO out of a bottle should have a Ph of 5-6 and a Kh of zero. Once aerated, the Ph should come up to 7, while the Kh will remain at zero. If your RO water is 7.8 out of the bottle, I question whether it truly is RO water. Perhaps you were stating that the Ph was 7.8 in the tank after adding the RO water. If this is the case, your tap water likely has a high Kh and Gh, and will require more RO water to bring the Ph down.
If the Dovii keepers say 8.2 is fine, I would save the money and stop buying RO.

Holy cow love the info! Yes the ph of the tank was 7.8 after the water was added. I'm gonna do a water change tomorrow with tap. Could the lack of minerals in the ro water contribute to his color being a little dull? Not as bright as they were. So then is best to use both or just straight conditioned tap? Sorry if I'm asking the same questions, only way to learn.

The amount of RO you added is too small to impact the doviis color. However, if the ph changed significantly this could definitely cause stress which could appear as change in color.

I use RO on all my SA/CA tanks. I mix my water in 32 gallon rubbermaid containers. I start with 10gallons of tap and fill the rest with RO. After the container is full I add Seachem's "American Cichlid Salt" to the water in the adequate dose and mix water with a powerhead. My dovii spawn constantly this way and so do my RTM's. I do 50% water changes every week at least once on all my tanks as well. As mentioned by others RO is not necessary but I like to use it as it keeps my water almost identical each time I do water changes. I am not at the mercy of what the city puts in the water as much as if I used straight tap.
