Roaches as Food

I have heard of Arowana Farms feeding roaches to their Arowanas. However how many of you hobbyist supplement your Arowanas diet with roaches. My Silver Arowanas in the past absolutely love them.

If you have not fed roaches to Arowanas I recommend them. I keep reptiles as well as aquarium fish and have colonies of three separate species of roaches that I breed and feed to both my reptiles and Arowanas. Mainly Dubia and Madagascar Hissing Roaches. The Madagascar Hissers adults are twice the size of large feeder fish and are a great size food item for an adult Arowana. The best part is once the colonies are going they can live on left overs and more than pay for themselves in the long run. If you start a colony I of course recommend keeping them in the garage, basement (a spot that stays somewhat warm) or somewhere else out of the main living quarters.

Some species such as Madagascar Hissing Roaches can climb glass and if they are going to be kept to start a captive colony require some homework for appropriate husbandry.

I don't think the prospect of having roaches in my house is very appealing, even if I get to watch them die by my fish. I think I'll stick to live fish with prepared foods tied to them.

I hear you however if you have got a spot well away from living quarters such as a garage or aquarium room or you are not squeamish I recommend it. Arowana farms regularly feed out roaches to their Arowanas and are a proven food. However I'm assuming of course that they do not breed their colonies near living quarters.

I hate roaches!! im sure the arowana will love them probally the same as crikets! I just don't like dealing with roaches period.

I don't suggest roaches unless you are sure you have a consistent supply of them, I used to feed my jardini roaches at one time and it loved them so much that he stopped taking everything else.. and once my garden was out of roaches, he starved for three months and stopped growing....

He's back onto prawns again and is bulking up nice

Makes sense not to keep them then. Roaches are something that is not for everyone. They are a staple component of diet of captive reptiles though and Arowanas are quite fond of them (especially the adults Arowanas).

Once colonies are going the are extremely abundant source of food. My two biggest colonies that I have got number around 2-3 thousand (nymphs and adults total) and are in no short supply and my Arowana still eats food sticks and thawed prawns.

I'm not saying to keep roach colonies in the house I'm saying keep them out of living areas and only bring them to living quarters to feed them to your Arowanas.
