Can you give a description of your dubia colony? What do you keep them in? how did you start it? how long did it take to get established. I hear that they don't climb too well and can't move like the common roach can. I've been considering it for my cichlids.

To start a dubia colony I use a 15 gallon screen topped terrarium filled with egg crates. Add one or two dozen adult dubias. I keep them at 80-90F and feed the left over kitchen greens and fish food flakes. That is about that in about 4-6 months you'll have a couple hundred. In a year a thousand if you keep all your breeding adults and dubia don not climb glass. For a source of dubia's you can buy them online or normally at Reptile Stores. They may have more than one species that can be used, however Dubia are one of the most popular with reptile keepers.

Here's a picture of some roaches from one of my colonies. They are kept outside of the house in my Aquarium Room.

My Arowana still eat thawed prawns and Arowana sticks. However they come close to fighting over roaches. These are Dubia roaches.

looks nasty, but im willing to try lol. only thing is that im in vegas and it might be too much work

I love dubia roaches!
I hate crickets.. I've had a tarantula for over 10 years and the biggest thing I hated about having her was having to buy crickets. I really hate crickets, can't even say why.
I first got roaches a few years ago, had 4 females and 1 male, fed a female to spidey, then they started breeding in their "holding jar" and I realized I had no more need for crickets :)
Within a year I had hundreds and it was perfect, they feed the fish, the geckos, the tarantula, and any large males I don't need get fed to the fox.
The cat likes to knock over cricket containers so she can chase them, not eat, just chase. Problem solved!
Then we had a sudden move and the roaches got left in the truck during a heat wave.. Hundreds of dead roaches. :(
I bought more (all babies) and I'm expecting babies any time now!
Fish love them, spidey loves them, geckos love them, foxy loves them, and with a breeding community you always have the size you want/need.

I'll never go anywhere near Roaches, especially after watching Men In Black.

I'll stick to pellets and live feeders

I keep my 3 colonies of roaches as far away from the house and living quarters as possible. I used to keep them on the far wall in the garage and now out the house completely in the aquarium room.

They are my Arowanas preferred food.

OMG, I have actually said to roaches: "Oh I'm sorry, was that your auntie?? Then this must be your uncle.." Or cousin, or other uncle, or stepbrother.. I like to tell my roaches how much I appreciate them allowing me to avoid crickets a little more..

I like this thread but I hate roaches.
