Tile is a cool new look in aquariums but gravel offers extra surface for bacteria colonies,it can be a junk trap depending on what you feed your fish though.

I like smallish gravel. Tile? I have never seen.
What is your reason for removing gravel? Like krichardson said, that could be a small shock to your bio-colony.
Personally, I took my gravel out and replaced with #12 silver river sand. All the benefits of sand with the vacuuming characteristics of gravel. Love it.

I find tanks with gravel clearer overall and more surface area for beneficial bacteria. I also find my fish seem more comfortable with gravel or sand if you like it.

i use natural slat tile

here is a pic the first day i set up my tank.
and a pic now... cant really see the tile in the last pic

Very nice! I love simple tanks.

When I upgrade, it will probably be gravel for me; maybe tile. No more sand.

does waste/food settle on/in the gravel in your setup? I'd say if it is and you are willing to part with the gravel then go ahead and remove it. If you do this, monitor your water parameters to see if the decrease in the BB colony has an impact on it. you might want to get an external canister filter or a sump to match your previous levels.

I have gravel, sand, & barebottom tanks. I think it depends on the fish you keep! I keep my oscars in barebottom tank as their pigs! Most people break the gravel rule!if you use gravel it isn't supposed to be very deep!1" at most is what the experts say.if you remove your gravel you should be fine as most of your BB is in your filter anyhow! If your worried about it only remove a portion of it during your weekly water change.that's how I removed gravel from my oscar breeders.
