I am working on an African Cichlid setup and have a couple of questions about rocks;
1. What type of rocks should I go with, preferably something that can buffer the pH (not necessary but would be nice)?
2. I see a lot of tanks that are just stacked with rocks, how much can the glass handle?
3. Where do I go to buy the rock? It appears that all the local stores have rocks considerably smaller than what I am looking for and have some ridiculous pricing.

there are alot of options, lava rock is pretty good.

what i've seen some people do for their cichlid tanks is, get some egg crate and silicone pebbles on to it, but cut out some holes so they can hide in there. or PCV pipes with holes drilled into the sides, so they can swim in and out of the tubes and just silicone pebbles onto them... :thumbsup:

Cant answer the first 2, but I get my rocks from a landscaping place. You can also find them at farm supply stores sometimes, and if you're lucky you can find a shop that sells nothing but rocks. We have one down the road from us and we get all sorts of cool rocks dirt cheap.

I used left over pieces from my flagstone walk way. The landscaping place had lots of different kinds of rocks. I used plastic 2x4 grid for floresent lighting from Home Depot, to help spread out the weight.
