I wanted to decorate my tank a bit better and was looking for a way to save money. I look at the LPS and they have rocks that are so expensive although I see the same ones at like garden centers and stuff. Can someone tell me some rocks that I can buy just anywehre that are safe for a tank. Like I know some will deteriate and cause PH changes. Is there something to do to these rocks to make them safe. One that I really like is a flat greyish rock look something like flagstone or something like that???? any one know what I'm talking about???

I picked up a bunch of rocks out of the stream behind my best friend's house. I scrubbed them with a wire brush and then baked them in the oven at 400 F. let them cool down and then they are tank ready.

from what I've read if you drop a bit of vinegar on a rock and it fizzles then don't use it. if there's no reaction then it's fine. I think the ones that fizzle leach calcium which will cause the ph to rise but don't quote me on that. :)

yea i did the same thing..........i went behind my cuz's house and got a bunch of river rocks out of the river back there........i went home and scrubbed the heck out of em and put em in.........i didn't affect my ph at all but i might have gotten lucky...........
