Caught a couple weeks ago as a shoal of half dozen, all in the same net cast, in the Rio Uni a small stream in Panama.
The pH was about 8, undetectable nitrate, the river only about 10 ft wide, and quite shallow.
Very interesting fish, thanks for sharing.
I had a group of Charax gibbosus once, they remind me very of of those.
Scale eaters who didn't even play well with each other... I hope that yours behave better!
The biggest problem with these, is that they (along with most Characins) are carriers of Lernaea parasites (anchors worms)
and I did not quarentine them long enough, causing (what I believe to be) a parasiteepidemic in the main tank, that eventually spread to all tank residents.
And where the Lernaea attached, secondary infection followed.
Yesterday I had the chance to take some pictures of wild caught Roeboides from Rio Esti.
Some individuals have red unpaired fins some don't. They are from the same location as far as I know. I wonder if this is some way to tell male and female apart, or if this is normal range of colours within the population?
