Room for more in 55g pred. tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You might want to pick up a 3rd and just keep on top of those waterchanges. I know when I just had a pair they were constantly nipping/fighting -both lost their barbels and one lost a pectoral fin- but as soon as I got a third it was peaceful (relatively) again. Maybe that was a freak occurance, but just keep an eye on them. Congrats on the new pick-up

Hmmm, so let me throw this out there: Can I consider a delhezi? Or are those too big for a 55g?

I do have some options, though, for down the road. I have a 75g and a 4' x 15" 55g both with various cichlids....If I picked up a bichir that outgrows a standard 55g I could probably move it into one of these other tanks if needed.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Definitely get a delhezi if you want to. Depending on how big you buy it and if it is wild caught or not, it should be fine in a 55g for quite a while.

you could add several more sens/albino sens or delhezy, but I would not put syno cat in there. As for other tankmates, anything small enough to fit in your bichirs mouth are in risk of getting eaten.

I went out looking for dels yesterday and saw one that was *HUGE* -- like 12" long and 3" thick! Worried me a little, so I kept looking and found another nice senegal in the 5" range and picked him up.

So far all 3 are keeping to themselves, but seem to be doing fine. I think I may redecorate my tank so that one side has lots of plants / caves for the ABK and Leaf, while the other side is pretty sparse, with maybe just a single cave for the bichirs to hang out it.

Things are going pretty well so far -- the new senegal is super active (like my original). The new albino isn't quite, though, so I'm monitoring him for any issues...maybe just still adjusting.

Here's a pic of the new senegal (I think he's a senegal):

Can you take under pics of the 1st pic of senegal side view not on slightly upper view. Is it just my monitor is way to wide or that sene is way to long.
I thought the same thing...

More pics please? :)

Yes, I'll try to get some better pics. Actually I am wondering though -- the new guys is longer and skinnier than my 1st. Also new guy doesn't have a black spot on his side and is almost more brown than grey....maybe a different species?
