Do you know what kind of tree or bush it came from. All firs and pines should be avoided (sorry, Jag, juniper included) since their sap contains toxins that take much longer than two weeks to be removed. You should also try to use hardwoods since they're the least prone to rotting.

I kinda thought so.. I would have had about 30 or more cool looking branches if it would have worked :(

yeah I wish I knew. problem is, the consruction bazically just knowcked down a small forest so it could be anything. i don't think im gonna risk trying it, even though it is a really nice piece that would probably be close to 100$ if it were at some LFS.

A piece of slate screwed to the bottom would solve that issue though.
Not if the air is trapped in. Especially in softer woods, this method will not work with trapped air.

You could always buy several little pieces cheap and build them into a large piece. Like this:

In Washington, that's about $90 worth of wood..

Grapevine isn't the best choice for wood either. It often gets fungus, and takes forever to sink.

Ebay, my friend. I got twelve pieces of those for $13 with shipping. Can't beat that with a stick.:D

That may be true of the younger "runners" that often get sold as terrarium driftwood, but the older pieces of the "trunk" are much harder and less prone to rotting. I had that piece tied to a rock in my pond for quite a few months (maybe a year) and didn't see any fungus as of yet. But it also didn't stay submerged all of the time since the water levels fluctuated so much (about eight months in, three months out).

That's a great deal :headbang2
