My last (and only) root canals (yes, I had two done at once) were performed while I was under passive anesthesia. I took two pills, 1 an hour before the operation and the 2nd at the dentist's office, which left me awake and responsive but totally spazzed out. Actually, I remember taking the 2nd pill while they hooked me up to a pulseox scanner and blood pressure monitor, and then remember tellling my wife to stop at Burger King to get me a Frozen Coke on the way home. That BK stop was almost 5 hours later! In between, I: discussed Harry Potter books, discussed how *&%&ty the Harry Potter movies are, discussed why the New Orleans Saints are more important to me than my wife, discussed my entire graduate thesis, and evidently asked the (extremely attractive) dental hygienist out on a date. I don't remember any of these events, the hygienist filled me in on it when I got my permanent crowns fitted 2 weeks later. In closing - it was like blacking out. And afterwards I ate a taco. So much for pain. I'll dig around and see what the prescription anesthetic was. I recommend it highly. Only downside - it cost me $250. And most of my dignity around the hygienist (see reference to wife above).
