well I guess my main question is what exactly are they and what are they use for? Im new to the whole thing and am thinking about setting up a planted aquarium.

also what kind of substrate would you all advise using?

bear in mind im new to the planted aquarium scene and am looking for advise and may ask quite a few "stupid" questions.

thanks guys

root tabs are substrate ferts for small tanks or "spot shot" ferting.
i have two in a 2.5 cause the fert bags were WAY too huge for just a 2 gal
just stick em under the gravel or sand and they are good to go. i would advise against putting them with anything that burrows or digs up the ground as when it (tabs) get wet they immediately start to decompose and fall apart in the tank clouding water and leading to algeal blooms

They work very well for swords or any other heavy root feeder. Stick one in about every six inches and pretty much forget fo three months.

so is this a must for planted aquariums? or is there another or easier way to fertilize the tank.

oh one more question what kind of fertilizer is this and im assuming it wont kill the fish in the tank?
