Got a customer who was sold a rope fish (competitor) as the perfect oddball for a 29 gallon community. Not working out and now she wants to get rid of it. Not sure on size yet but it been getting 4-5 minnows a day for the last week. Best,if any, way to get it off live foods, SA/CA cichlids as room mates, and how small of an opening can they get through? Lots of questions, sorry and I'm sure they have all been answered at some point here already. And are ropes and plecos an absolute no?

Best,if any, way to get it off live foods? Its really simple quit giving it live food.there is a huge amonut of frozen foods they will eat along with a good quality pellet. It may take a cpl of days but they will eat whenn they get hungry.
plug any opening you can.-Anne

My ropes and plecos are just fine together. The ropes eat frozen bloodworms and they "smell" it really quickly.

my ropefish and bichirs are best of friends.. so they make great tank mates together..

I love watching them eat live food but frozen foods work great too. your whole tank would enjoy bloodworms! As for the rope/pleco combo, that should be fine, just make sure there are plenty of hiding places so they don't have to share a cave.

Thanks Anne, Liz, merc123, and smpage. She is supposed to bring it tomorrow so I'll have pics on Friday if it happens. My biggest concern was the tankmates.

How long do ropes grow to? Thinking of getting a 6" rope. How many months do they tk to reach over 15"?

!8 inches in home aquaria seems to be the average tho they have the potential to reach approx 2-3'

:iagree: 16"-18" seems to be the average size they get to in captivity, although in the wild its been recorded at close to 3ft, but that coulda been an unusually large specimen. as for reaching over 15" in captivity, you're talking years, not months, starting from a juvy.

Got him. About 10 inches long. Will try to get better pics as he comes out of hiding. He ate the lady's entire collection of neons. guppies, and female bettas. She was told it was the perfect addition to her peaceful community tank.
