For myself, with the two most common polypterids, I'd choose the ropes. Most other bichirs I'd go for over the ropes. Of course, you can keep both in the 55.

I love my rope fish.. it is in there with 2 lima shovelnose catfish and it is very active. I have never had any problems with it trying to escape my tank. When i had oscars the rope fish would eat their big round pellets.. It will eat pretty much any kind of food i put it.. It even chased my feeder fish, but is to slow to catch them

Sens all the way! i dislike the snakey appearance of the ropes. also, ropes are easy lose and can easily escape from ur tank to the afterlife. The size, length, and shape of the Senegals are just right!
I like them both, but prefer bichirs. As for being addictive, if you already have MTS, the answer isn't yes, it's *&^%$#@! YES!!! Senegals are a gateway drug...
