Rope fish!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Two main things with ropefish escape proof your tank and they will eat whatever firs in their mouth and then some. They become very personable with time. And if you can get some floating plants they hang out in it alot. And when you feed them a piece of fish they will grab it and death roll like a gator. Pretty cool to see. They like caves too make sure you provide one they will spend alot of time in there. And largest ive seen was about 16-18"

I find them to be like senegal polypterus in behavior...not the most personable fish but active and not particularly shy, like spiny eels for example

They have to potential to get 36" but they typically only get around 18-20" in the home aquaria.

I've never even heard of one over 15'' in home aquaria. And also, these guys are not like a 15'' standard polypterus would be. They stay pretty skinny and live up to their name.

As was said earlier, the MOST IMPORTANT THING is to make sure that there are ABSOLUTELY NO OPENINGS in your tank they can escape from. For example, if you're using a HOB filter, the rope will be able to swim up the waterfall and out of the tank. I had exactly this happen with my first one.

not to thread jack, but do they do better in groups? ive read that on a few sites, I cant see the thing being aggressive, and it seems quite active and happy, but if more is merrier id definitely like to save one from a ghetto lfs

They do like to be in groups. I had three for a while an the would hang together. It may take a while for them to buddy up but they should do fine.
