Hey all wondering if anyone has tips on rope fish health, I got a rope fish and it's been breathing heavy and keeping coiled up and when it moves it goes around like a cork screw, any ideas?

pics or video? You can get a ton more help if you post this in the Polypterus section. It might be stressed or something like that.

Large (>50%) water change ASAP, then buy a test kit for your nitrate, ammonia etc. We'll be able to help you better when we have your readings.

ya highly chance is bad water quality.

Could be whirling disease, my Pleco got it and he died within two days, if it is you should change all (if not most) of the water and clean the decorations so the other fish don't get it, if it isn't thought here's some tips:

Always keep a tight lid, my rope fish managed to escape through a 2 cm hole after 2 hours being in the tank

don't keep with small fish because he will most probably eat them

they like to eat bloodworms, I wasn't successful at all with pellets

Hopefully it's not whirling disease, keep us updated :)

It's not the water quality, nitrates never go above 10 nitrites are zero same with ammonia, ph is just above 7, the tank has drip system with constantly exchanges water plus they get 20-40% water changes a week, the tanks are at a pet store not my personal one, I'll test again just to make sure,

lol here come the questions lol. How long ago did you get him? what size tank do you have? when was the last time you changed the water? what are the other tank mates?

srry to here that i just posted my above post when yours popped up. Srry to here that man

Since he was breathing heavily it seems like some kind of stress caused it. If you just got it within a couple of days ago it could be because of stress. Also how big was he?
