Ropefish Escaped - Cannot find

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i am very sorry for your loss.... i have had to take out a few ornamental caves etc.. sometimes just not safe.. i remember one was all jagged edges inside.. i lost my bichir...

Sorry for your loss and thanks for the tip.

Sorry for your loss. I too had lost a fish due to an unsafe hollow ornament. It had a larger opening on one side and a smaller one on the other. There wasn't enough room for the fish to turn around and exit, so he was caught in there. Ever since, I carefully inspect every ornament before purchase. My requirements are: if it is hollow, the inside must be completely empty, no passage ways, multiple escape holes and it must be smooth on the inside. Otherwise, I stick to rocks and driftwood.

Thanks for the replies. My son was heartbroken about Tolly. Luckily our LFS had a few ropefish and we bought another. My son named it Tolly II. The ropefish that escaped is doing very well. He looked like his back and sides had some damage when I first but him back in the tank. But I think it was just that he had gotten a little dried out. Now he looks completely normal.

lots of luck with Tolly II ... and glad the other guy has made a full recovery

i had a 16" rope that went missing for about 3 days and he couldnt get out i took my tank and drained half the water to do a WC i found a small whole behind a large ornament and realized that he might have gotten inside, i had taken him to the tub and made up some water for him in it so he wouldnt get his gills burnt, i proceded to delacatly smash the hell out of the ornament and break it apart he was coiled up and stuck inside he slithered out and i let him play in the tub for a little bit so he could stretch out after being in what surly would have been his coffin. I also dont buy hollow anything and if it has roots that are hollow i will fill them with aquarium gravel so no one can get trapped.
