Ropefish Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
when you said dense vegetation it makes me think of making the tank a jungle pyramid type set-up with all the ropes swimming in and out of the decor.

That's pretty much exactly how I envisioned my tank :)

In a standard 75gl tank you can put up to 7-10 depending on tank mates if any. They will have more then enough room to cruise around in, as the ones that get larger above 20inches you could easily move them to your main tank, lots of fake or live plants will do these guys good, but be careful of rocks and wood that they can get under as they may get stuck and drown.

yeah I'm thinking about just having a rope fish only tank and densely planting it. Something I've also thought about is dropping the water level to about 2" or so below the trim and getting some kinda plastic rock type structure and using suction cups to make it be in the water just a little bit but mostly out so they can climb up the rock if they want, because I aw a video on you tube were someone did that and it looked really cool

I know exactly what you are talking about, I did something like that years ago with a custom background, had large overhanging rocks with small LED lighting,, was a great effect

If you are able to making your own tank could be really cool. Im planning on making a square 3x3 or 4x4 for just ropes. I would think that 6-8 in a standard 75g would be fine.

Heavy planting is good for them, but in my swamp they almost entirely hang out in a tangle of driftwood pushed up against the glass. It's got a bunch of raised dirt in it, and they actually swam through it and sort of made tunnels. It's sort of like a ropefish ant farm.

Haha sounds cool

Interesting behavior there prion, like mike said these guys can squeeze into holes in decor youd think they were too big for. My buddy had a rope before i got mine (i got mine at ten inch) and he bought this plastic log decor, we both looked at the holes and the fish and figured nah wont happen. Then he calls me and tells me hes picking me up and we literally had to pull it out of the log it was not a good time haha

mine loves the plants, another cool thing ive seen them do is hang out kind of like tentacled snakes to grab bloodworms and such as they float by. I really hope there ends up being more then one specie of rope and we just havent found it yet haha really neat fish very underappreciated

If u want heavy plants in your tank make sure ur have a high substrates level to deeply achor the plant root. Or have plants that can attached itself to rocks or driftwood. I had a CB upper jaw bichirs before and during feeding, when the ropes does the deathroll, they uprooted some of the plants. Have some willow moss in ur setup. Get a plastic chicken wire make sure the micro mess and attached the willow moss. Use a strong tread ti attached them and make a wall background out of them. Over time the willow moss will grow and will looks nice. You'll end up with a willow moss background. Other people who usually keep shrimps, use willlow moss to end up lookinh like a tree. Try looking at amano shrimp setup. Also add some bumps on the willow moss wall setup. My ropefish and small bichir loves to hang out on the wall bumps. Adding with the water lettuce roots hanging diwn and the effects looks like a dense jungle. Jave ferns can make a good addition too. Trim off the wider leaves and it will grow into tiny branchy lookinh leaves. Just make sure you have 10-12 hours lights though. Also add some snails. Not only you're bichirs will try to eat them but also cleans the uneaten food and the algae on the glass and leaves of the plants. Over time the bichirs will ignore them, only will eat few snails if they feel like it.

I'm keeping a rope with three upper jaw bichirs in a high tech planted 75. So far they are excellent with the plants and all.

Ropes are also super active...I might grab a second though just cause.
