Hey all, I am also taking all recommendations on what to feed the smaller grow outs, and how often. Right now they are getting, Rotifers when they are really small, BBS and NLS growth as they get bigger. Luckily they are taking frozen of everything and I have avoided culturing the Rotifers and BBS, though I want to start that soon for a cost savings. So let me know what you suggest. Thanks in advance.
I'm feeding my notatus everything they'll eat. They're about 1 - 1.5" now at 2 months old. They love frozen Hikari bloodworms, Hikari micro-pellets, crushed Hikari Cichlid Gold, and the occasional beefheart. They also tear up the algae wafers I use for my plecos once they soften in the water, and they've stripped a thick layer of green algae off my tank walls.
I'm doing 90% water changes a day on the 55 gallon grow-out because they're getting heavy feedings. They're probably eating 6 - 8 small meals a day. All the food is gone within a minute or two.
How many do you have in your 55? I am using a 55 right now as well. I currently have 29 littles in there and am doing a 60% water change every second or third day, but will increase that as they grow larger. I am using a large sponge filter and a HOB canister as well.
I saw a video of Rotkeils eating leaf lettuce last night and might add a bit of that to the adults diet and possibly the juvies as well. What do you think?
I have about 35-40 three week old swimmers that are getting ready to move from the 10g where they start life away from their parents, to the 20 gallon last stage before the 55 Grow Out.
Oh, and last night the parents laid eggs again. The female is getting a little worn out so I think after this batch gets to free swimming I will separate the tank to give her a break.
I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. I have 31 little ones in the 55. It's bare bottom with a sponge filter and an AquaClear 110.
There are another 40 - 50 fry in a 20 gallon that are about a week old (I think). I start mine in 20 gallon tanks. They are getting daily 50% water changes and eating live BBS about 4 times a day. I add extra which stays alive for a few hours in fresh water, so they have a pretty constant food source. I started with hundreds of fry but I lost almost half of them before they ever went free-swimming. I'm not entirely sure why.
Mom and dad are in the 210g community now and aren't spawning at the moment. However, I did have a female notatus pair with a male turquoise and lay a ton of eggs. Luckily they got eaten; I don't really want hybrids.
I was feeding spinach leaves and Romaine lettuce to my Mesonauta but the severums definitely ate it, too. I'd give it a try and see what they think of it. I also tried peas and zucchini when I had my Uaru, but the severums didn't seem to appreciate that as much as the leafy stuff.
