Can I keep a pair or trio of these in a 55 or is that too small? Do they do best alone or in pairs/trios ? Can they be kept with angelfish?
Thanks

You'll get varying opinions but I'd suggest a bigger tank for them. I kept a notatus pair in a 55 for a short time and found the pair was a bit rough on each other. The 13" width is the thing that bugs me the most. Even though a 75 is only 20 more gallons, it gives you an extra 5" width that works better IMO.

You can keep angels with severums but I wouldn't suggest a severum pair with anything. A pair will be highly territorial and aggressive.

Similar thought here. Tank size makes a difference, sometimes a dramatic difference, in severum behavior. They don't like to be crowded by tank dimensions imo. I've taken what was a psycho killer severum off someone's hands and simply put it in a larger tank and had the same fish be quite peaceful. I've seen people try to breed severum pairs in 29 gal 'breeder tanks' and they can't figure out why the same fish that paired up in the display tank now want to kill each other. A 55 is tight, would depend on the particular individuals, including individual temperament and size, possibly aquascape would make a difference, but imo it's a might work, might not scenario (sans the angelfish).

I've kept angels and severums together, including both severum and angelfish pairs, with little problem at all-- but in a much bigger tank.

A pair would be fine with a school of dither type fish. I would stay awsy from a trio even in a 75g.
