I have a few extra 20's and 10 gallon tanks laying around. And want to put them to some good use. I want to breed my Rotkeil severums. I have 11 right now in a 20 long. Their only an inch though so their not pairing up or anything yet.

What would be a good size tank for them to breed. I'm hoping to get a good 3-4 pairs out of the potential 11 sevs. I'm thinking of 29g tanks, but of course smaller if they can breed and live in a smaller tank, but I doubt that they could. Not sure of how big they get anyways.

And is there anything special about how they breed. They like caves, just plain sand or gravel to breed in. What do they usually breed on. Or any other information that would help in breeding. How do you sex them also. I've seen adult pics of these cichlids and their just amazing with their red on them.

How do u plan on getting a pair? letting them pair up or picking out what u think is male and female? At an inch big your faaaaarrr from starting to breed these. Ours is about 5" already at 4 years old or so and it will probably just now start breeding. i would guess if you grew out the babies in a much larger tank they will grow better and might pair off sooner.

Im planning on getting a bigger tank for them to breed in. That is why i was asking what would be a good size tank for them to breed in. I will be moving them to whatever would be the better size tank so they can pair off. Plus their only an inch long like i already said. 4 years to breed i also find very hard to believe. Ive had convicts and GT'S breed at three inches and all were under a year old. Unless sevs are the exception and are real slow growers. And i meant for all of the extra 10's and 20's to be fry tanks, I wouldn't be breeding in these tanks just to clarify.

Me too I dont see how it can take 4 years for them to grow that slow, It just seems ridiculous, but IDk mine are just wee juvies.:D

Can anyone help me on the breeding part though, like what size tank etc.

4years! owch

I started with sevs.
My first set were gold severums i had since b4 my first daughter was born shes about to be 4.
they grew at a decent rate.
My most recent tho seem to be growing faster I dont know tho.
Maybe it is different for all of them.
Probably has to do with tank size and how many fish are with them too i suppose.
But im no expert im guessing.

i have trouble keeping 2 in my 44 let alone get them 2 breed. try at least a 55 gallon for a pair
