Routine maintenance on a Fx5

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I cleaned mine yesterday and their was white grit from the bio max and small 1mm chunks on the very bottom, looking at the actual bio max it is starting to degrade, prlly from the friction over time, I've been slowly replacing with api Chem stars, about half and half, a lot of bio but it does work, more then carbon ever did.

Do you replace all the biomax every three months? Or do you just do one basket every three months to preserve the bacteria?

I only replace the biomax when it starts to really fall apart to keep it from damaging the filter. This could sometimes take over a year. When i do replace it i never change them out all at once, that would eliminate too much B.B. I take the biomax out of one of the fx5's at a time, and keep the other one running until the one i changed out has reestablished.

I think we are talking well over a year. I've have bio media around here running that's been around a long time. I think the other main concern besides it wearing out is it getting clogged up. In that case I bleach it out in hot water and then dechlor.

I have mine on my 125 and I clean it very month and a half to two months or so... As far as media, since I also keep AC110's, I just use the same media from those in the baskets as fell as a couple of those blue polishing/filter sheets. I'm not a fan of cleaning it but I love the work that it does. My water is crystal clear.
