1-Month Review – Royal Exclusive Dreambox Compact Large (Freshwater Setup)
System
Tank: Red Sea S1000 G2 (freshwater)
I was previously running filter socks and changing four socks every two days.
I then installed a ReefMat 1200 (converted to freshwater). Raising it 100mm above the sump improved performance, but I was still going through 35m rolls every 8–11 days.
Costs:
•Genuine rolls: ~€21 each → ~€70 per month
Researching Alternatives
Most larger roller filters I looked at had:
Expensive replacement rolls
Pricing:
Dreambox Compact: ~€800
Dreambox Compact Large: ~€1040
Yes — serious money.
Why I Chose the Compact Large
Compact uses 185mm rolls (~€21 each when bought in bulk)
Sump Modifications
To make it work, I had to:
Rework the entire sump flow layout
Everything ran perfectly during testing.
Purchase & Installation
Royal Exclusive offered 15% off during a seasonal sale, so I ordered:
Dreambox Compact Large
The unit allows top or bottom feed (32mm or 40mm pipe options). Top feed is the recommended setup.
Installation required:
Emptying and removing the sump
Allow proper water return
So far — excellent.
Current usage:
~9m of roll per week
That’s a major improvement in cost efficiency compared to the ReefMat setup.
Backup Plan
If there’s ever an issue, the original sock tray is still installed and can be swapped back into operation within minutes.
Overall Thoughts (After 1 Month)
✔ Extremely well built
✔ Long roll life (major running cost advantage)
✔ Excellent mechanical filtration
✔ Ideal for heavy bioload systems
✘ High upfront cost
✘ Requires serious sump space
✘ Likely needs custom modification in many setups

Tank: Red Sea S1000 G2 (freshwater)
- Stocking: Overstocked with large cichlids
- Target flow: ~3200 LPH
I was previously running filter socks and changing four socks every two days.
I then installed a ReefMat 1200 (converted to freshwater). Raising it 100mm above the sump improved performance, but I was still going through 35m rolls every 8–11 days.
Costs:
•Genuine rolls: ~€21 each → ~€70 per month
- Chinese rolls: ~€11 each → ~€35 per month
Researching Alternatives
Most larger roller filters I looked at had:
Expensive replacement rolls
- Limited roll length
- Similar long-term running costs
Pricing:
Dreambox Compact: ~€800
Dreambox Compact Large: ~€1040
Yes — serious money.
Why I Chose the Compact Large
Compact uses 185mm rolls (~€21 each when bought in bulk)
- Compact Large uses 285mm rolls
- 75m rolls available at ~€29 each (or ~€25 each buying 20)
- That roll length is where the real saving is
- The downside?
Sump Modifications
To make it work, I had to:
Rework the entire sump flow layout
- Narrow the rear flow channel feeding the return pumps
- Remove and relocate the front-left divider panel (~120mm back)
- Angle the panel slightly to maintain proper return flow
- Install new 5mm plexiglass using Tec7 Aqua Safe
- Ensure footprint space of 320mm x 415mm
Everything ran perfectly during testing.
Purchase & Installation
Royal Exclusive offered 15% off during a seasonal sale, so I ordered:
Dreambox Compact Large
- 20 × 75m rolls (~€25 per roll)
The unit allows top or bottom feed (32mm or 40mm pipe options). Top feed is the recommended setup.
Installation required:
Emptying and removing the sump
- Raising the Dreambox 150mm using supplied risers
Allow proper water return
- Add additional media underneath (important as my sump is already full of media)
So far — excellent.
Current usage:
~9m of roll per week
- Estimated 7–8 weeks per 75m roll
That’s a major improvement in cost efficiency compared to the ReefMat setup.
Backup Plan
If there’s ever an issue, the original sock tray is still installed and can be swapped back into operation within minutes.
