I'm nowhere near an expert at differences in species. What little I know has been learned out of frustration in not being able to find an actual L190. I haven't even come across a vendor (yet) that knows the difference. The L190's can be olive green/black striped but most commonly they're gray/black striped. They always have bright red eyes & they get up to around 18". The L191 Dull-Eyed Royals are usually olive green/black striped with very dull colored eyes & are extremely common, it's what most vendors have, they get around 9"-10" max. The reason I thought the OP's Royal was an L190 is because he looked gray/black striped with bright red eyes (unless I'm mistaken because the picture's not real clear). But like I said-I'm not a species expert at all.

I know the differences between dull eyed royals vs. the rest of the royals. not debating for a second that it's a L-191. I'm asking what the difference between the L-027b and the L-190 are and why the OP's royal couldnt possibly be either one without knowing where it came from.

It's the same fish in both pictures, AddictedToMbus, right? That Royal is an L191, not an L190. See? This is the problem I've run into from vendors for a year now. They swear they have an L190 with gray/black stripes and when they send the picture, it's an L191-the Dull-Eyed Royal with olive green/black stripes. I've already got 2 identical to yours, they're 5" now.
I got this from another sight:
L190 - P. nigrolienatus is the "standard" Royal.
L027a - Watermelon or Spotted Royal
L027b - Tele Pires Royal
L027c - "Xingu" & "Tocantins" Royal P. cf. nigrolineatus "Araguaia","Tapajos" & others
L191 - Dull-eyed Royal

oo crap read it wrong i thought u said gray eyes fwahahahaha
