royal's

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
sure. theyre dietry requirements are all the same. basically they NEED bogwood. larger ones will go through pounds of the stuff. they use the lignin it contains to help digest other food. they eat algae but you must provide vegetables with plenty of roughage, and i think cucumber, zucchinni and most of all potatoes (sliced and washed) are best for it, even though you can feed peas or mango or kiwi or lettuce etc etc. i give all plecos the chance to have protein because it keeps the colour up and it makes for a balanced diet, stuff like bloodworms and prawns. royals in general are super suceptible to "sunken belly" due to internal parasites or lack of lignin. this is usually from long transportation, and they cant chow on bogwood, and so even when they start eating they cant digest the food properly, or a parasite is stealing the food from it-hence a lot of deaths. this is mainly in young small plecos, and i wouldnt advise anything less than 3" to be honest, its usually a case of the bigger the better... they are very picky water quality wise, but if you keep it constant it should be fine. diet is the most important things with royals, plenty of greens. they are beautiful though so are worth it.
o and cause they graze on algae constantly, you cant use a lot of meds, as it becomes concentrated in the algae and poisons the fish... if you have to use it, use super low concentrations.
i think thats most of it, but wyldfyas more of the royal guy, so if i missed something, he'll know for sure

so for me too be able too keep royals i would have too have dogwood in my tank you are talking about dogwood the tree arn't you?

oh sorry i spelled that wrong i've never heard of bogwood?

oh.
driftwood i can get . which do you think would be better driftwood from a local lfs or orderd from a catalog that way you can pick the sp. of tree
the only thing would be at a lfs you can pick the shape of it.

you need driftwood OR bogwood, either one.

As the names imply, bogwood is technically wood (of any kind) that comes from a bog.
A bog is a body of water that is replenished ONLY by rain.
Driftwood is any type of wood that falls from a tree and lands in a body of water be it stream, lake, river etc.

If you have never put wood in your aquarium before, I would recommend getting it from your local pet store for starts. Native wood must be identified as safe and then cured.

If your pet store has any aquarium specific malaysian driftwood, that's a good choice.
Plecos (particularly panaques) need to have wood in their diet for long-term good health.:)

thanks i new a bog was like a swamp but it didn't hit me:screwy:

how would you tell if a pice of drift wood is safe and how would you cure it?
