piranhas dont need cover to stay healthy
i guess you have kept piranhas in only one type of setup, thats the reason for your view. ive got 2 tanks with rbp, one is a bare tank without any plants/rocks/wood and one is a amazon type setup ,i can tell you there is no difference in health between the two groups and the ones in the bare tank is far less skittish.even chase fingers when hungry.

there is nothing about being paranoid.its just people giving their opinions:chillpill:
You can keep your anecdotal evidence to yourself thank you . I have set up my tank one way becuase i have RESEARCHED the fish i keep before i set up their tank. I don't do experiments with my fish i research their behaviour and set up a tank accordingly. Piranhas need cover, FACT! You can tell me how healthy your fish are but you fail to tell me how long you have even been keeping them like this. It's this kind of pseudo-science that has held back this hobby since it's inception. A similar statement would be saying " i can keep fish in godawful water conditions and they will be just as healthy as in clean water". Of course not but this is analogous to what you just said is it not? Alot of times you will see fish that look perfectly healthy in terrible water conditions (for a short time of course) but of course if you did a scientific systemic test of all bodily functions of the fish you would see it is clearly stressed in comparison to the fish kept in ideal water conditions. Same sort of thing with lack of cover the stress would be noticable in an actual scientific assesment but won't show up immediately if you don't have any menas to check for it.

You even went as far as to say the ones in your bare tank are more agressive to you ? How does this not seem like a symptom to you ? Acute stress increases metabolism (thereby increasing hunger) but chronic stress does the exact opposite. You are clearly blind to any of the differences in behaviour they may show because you are so convinced that they are fine either way.

They need places to establish territory and escape from each other even if they were completely unstressed by this you would still see more losses of piranhas in the tank with no cover because you need something to break the line of sight for a fight to stop or else the fish will continue to pursue each other until one of them gets hurt.

i wont reply in any inflammatory way coz this is a public forum .
and i didnt care to read your entire post too. we are here to discuss, not to criticise each other.lets not be childish.
stop attacking people. btw,ive been keeping and breeding piranhas for 13 years now.supply to all the lfs here.still new to the hobby in a way..we all have a lot to learn.

just ran into your blog while searching for what type of real plants to put in my 75 with one rbp. FYI, i only have one piranha, (and several other species) and have tried shaping the tank with different arrangements of rocks to create caves for him, but he always bashes into them. i have found that he loves to hide under my plastic floating plants. I put a couple floating plants on top of one another, and he is always hiding under them. He doesn't get hurt, and I don't have to rearrange the tank every morning :) Plastic floaters are cheap too!
