Question regarding my RTC.
He's not old, I've had him for about 1 month, he grows like hell!
BUT, He is spending his days and nights in the SAME SPOT 24/7. Under this piece of wood.

He is not scared overall, and not easily startled.
Earlier (like 2 weeks ago) my light in the tank was pretty bright, it is now changed and very dark, To see if he comes out. But nope :((except for some hours during the day, when the light from the window shines in) To see if he comes out. But nope :(

Do I have a problem or should I just wait? As I said he's been under the wood for a month. Any ideas?

I often see people that have their monsters in "open" tanks.
Would it be okey to take everything out?

mines do this as well under a rock he only comes out to feed on the bloodworms things like that. i was being to worry for a bit. but mines is veyr active at night when i dim down the lights. Have you checked him at night recently to see if he comes out?

I agree. my RTC stays under his rock house all day, As soon as the light is flicked off, he comes out. Although ive been trying to keep him on a diet lately as hes been growing faster then anything ive ever seen. Im afraid hes going to eat one of my oscars soon

My question is what is a good diet for him? Ive been feeding him and the 2 oscars krill and tubeflex works, night crawlers, or beefloin. Once a week they will get 2 dozen feeders, but the RTC will eat a good 12-15 in the first 5 minutes, and the rest when the lights go off. But then within 2 days hes about 2 inches larger.

Ive been scavengering craigslist for a large 180 tank but i cant find anything in an affordable price range that comes with the necessary equipment to get it up and running right away. I did find one 220gal that was under 500 for EVERYTHING until i noticed the shady poster forgot to mention he broke the entire side glass off the tank.

Ive tried to skim through this sticky but there so many pages filled with so much useful info, i just dont have the time to digest it all or find it all.

Earthworms and fish fillets are good ... careful with feeders because they can be laden with parasites.

You need a MUCH larger tank than 180/220 ... and might I suggest doing a pond build? It is MUCH cheaper. All you need is a good pond liner and some 2x4s and some plywood ... and then make a DIY sump/wet/dry filter .... look in the DIY section.
Or you could buy an intex pool and get good DIY filtration.

Thanks for the info. Well you'll laugh now, but my 2 oscars and RTC are currently housed in a 40 gallon long. They have plenty of room still, yet one oscar is beating on the other for the past 48 hours. And my red tail is almost top to bottom in length so i need something fast. I expected this to last longer then 3 months but i obviously was WRONG!!

I plan on going 180, if i could find a 220 that would be great. My fathers oldschool and still under the impression he will "grow to the size of the tank" and is slowly but surely going WOW more and more, and eating his words. If he were to outgrow a 180 i would have other plans like donating to our local aquarium since they only have 1 other RTC.(i know people hate hearing that answer) A pond would be great but since i down own my OWN house yet, i dont have that option.

It happens. Our eyes are bigger than our tanks, and it happens to most of us. The 180 might last you a year, maybe less in all honesty. Be planning to donate. Will not stay tank size, and if he does, he will die soon enough because he is stunted, however it looks like you are trying to prevent this. Until you find one, do plenty of water changes. 2 oscars will do well in a 180, and you could add a smaller cat.

Thats why im also looking bigger, for the 2 oscars as well. Id love to have them for years, as they are my first 2 ive tried to keep. And yes, as they are getting bigger, they are clouding the water much quicker. Ive been on a strict schedule of doing the oscars/RTC waterchange/filter change every saturday, and my cichlids sunday. Now Im doing it twice a weak. I might even remove ALL the gravel as its getting very dirty and when they shuffle fast they stir up everything.

Removing the gravel makes things much easier. Believe me ... just did it recently. Twice a week ... are you testing your water params? Just to make sure this is enough? Good luck :)
