RTC and TSN Information

Necro, just one doubt. Plants of surface like Eichhomia crassipes and Pistia stratiotes can help reducing the level of amonia, nitrates and the filtration as well ???

If your tank is cycled there shouldn't be any ammonia if you have adequate filtration. Some plants will reduce toxins, but you have to be carefull because after lights out they can starve your tank of O2. It's basically back to the fundamentals of tank cycling. Ammonia should be the first to reach 0, so any tank with ammonia present, probably has some kind of problem whether it's rotten food in the tank, fish getting sick in the tank, or filter crash.
 
Necrocanis, what a great thread. I thought it was only about RTC pics and rearing info and not disease. Well, as it happens i have an RTC with a potential gill-curl?

I have a question thread specific on this (more pictures) at http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=170962 RTC had it for quite some time (before i moved it to outdoor set-up). The curling does not seem to develop further but it is not getting better either. One of the 'soft' parts of the gill is flabby (see the picture). The 'hard' part of the gill is OK and is closed snuggly so the gills itself is not exposed or anything. After close examination it appears that the 'soft' part of the gill has some small leisions/wounds? on the inside (see the picture). Water parameters are acceptable according to the test strip (also other fish are not affected).

Please do note that the RTC with problem is missing three lower whiskers (from the day i got him) ... i wonder if that is also a reason...

If it is a water problem, then why the other RTC does not have it ... and neither do other inhabitant.

Wow his is pretty severe on that side. Keeping the water as clean as possible is about the only way to do anything and even then you might just be preventing it from getting worse. Seems it only gets better when they are really small. I've noticed from members on here that larger RTCs don't really progress in healing as much as babies. Do NOT try to trim whatever you do. Just be glad your other one does not have it. He should be fine, but probably has to breath a little harder than your other rtc to get as much oxygen to his gills. Make sure there is always plenty of dissolved oxygen in there.
 
Surprisingly, it does not labor to breathe. It eats more than the 'healthy' one (as it happens he has some arapaima in him ^^). It is just as active as the other andl friendly. Luckily the condition did not worsen (neither it improved). The gill is not exposed.

Is it consistent with gill curl to have scars/wounds/leisions (i am not even sure what it is) on the soft/flabby part of the gill. The hard part of the gill is not deformed. The gills are never visible.

i never examined a fish that died of gill curl before but the pictures of aros with gill curl show the actual gills

PS: the water is colored because it received sun light in the afternoon for couple of hours
 
honestly dude...ive read in ure other threads that u switched to all an feeder only diet and scrapped the pellets...u shuda gone the other way around. the feeders with parasites will probably make it worse. if all ure fish readily accept pellets just stick with that.

it is not too late since he is still eating, it indicates he is still healthy.

Don't worry, bro. By 'live' i don't mean feeder fish only. "Live" for me means more farm-raised frogs (buy by kilo). All my beasts are super lazy to chase darting feeders (they did kill two pacus that i tried to put in - did not eat though for some strange reason). If you see my updated thread on RTC, there are tons of left over feeders from ages ago (algae control?). I have not been adding feeders for a long time (snakeheads were the last). I do feed them pellets - just not as much (my initial joy of feeding pellets worn off when the water start changing color more than usual) - i must say that the water cleared up real quick once pellets were taken-off the menu. I will have to find a ballance - cos i like the idea of pellets being packed with balanced goodness.
 
whats a good temp range for these guys...I just put my pbass in w/ my hybrid and bumped up the temp from 82-86...is this too hot? SHould I lower it back down to 82?
