If your tank is cycled there shouldn't be any ammonia if you have adequate filtration. Some plants will reduce toxins, but you have to be carefull because after lights out they can starve your tank of O2. It's basically back to the fundamentals of tank cycling. Ammonia should be the first to reach 0, so any tank with ammonia present, probably has some kind of problem whether it's rotten food in the tank, fish getting sick in the tank, or filter crash.
