yah so im pretty sad/mad/dissapointed. but i only blame myself. my 2 TEMS were pushing 7" or so and getting large. they started looking to big for my 150 that was already kinda packed by other fish that i had no intentions on moving out. so i had to move the bass...

i tossed the 2 in my 400gal, and less then 20mins the rtc went crazy. i didn't even have a chance to net him as the tank is huge. and then the bigger bass dissapeared. just like that. in the RTC's stomach. damnit.

i netted the other tem and put him back in my 150 but 6 months of rasing this tem from like 1" to almost 7" and he's gone.

in 9 months, this rtc is almost 20" now from 1" back in december and fatter then my bicep. i love it, but i do not love how he ate my pbass. live n learn. i jus wanted to share my experience as this is my first rtc and his first real time eating a tankmate.

sorry for the loss......dont worry it gets worse :(

did it not occur to you that a 20" rtc would eat a 7" fish!! havent you noticed the size of a red tails mouth??!!

why am i not surprised!!

I'm not sure if/how this is practical for larger fish...
Here's how I used to handle introducing fish. I used a clear container, put it in the tank and the other fish could see them. Then I'd watch their interaction.

the rtc dont leave his layer of rocks. there are other fish in there that are only 5". so i thought i shouldn't have a problem. his mouth is only 2.5 or 3" wide or maybe smaller but he doesn't eat live food at all. only shrimp. so i didn't see this happening but it did.

im gonna build a pond pretty soon to get him out of my 400gal

I've raised RTC with other fish and they never bothered them but add a new one and its gone quick :screwy:

Sorry for your loss, That sucks but RTC's can and will eat everything in your tank. Its just a matter of time. I could probably write a book on what my RTC's have eatin. Its just unbelievable. I recently had a 5" RTC eat a 6" Green terror :screwy: I would have liked to see that one but all I got to see was the big belly.

so will a pangasius be too small to keep with a RTC?

-nevermind... thats a dumb question.

Sorry for you loss Ethnics.

Sorry for your loss ethnics. RTCs are known to eat just about anything. Tems are very nice fish so I feel your pain. You may want to consider a niger cat after you remove the RTC in the future. They will not bother anything and grow almost as large.

mcox3- pangasius may be fine with a RTC as long as they are equal or larger size. They also grow quickly so potentially it could work but you would need a huge tank.

this just sucks cuz i wanted to keep him in my 400 for a long time. he doesn't harm a single hair thats already in the tank tho. maybe i just shoudn't add any more new ones? or do u think eventually he'll eat my arowanas that are all bigger then him + they never go below the half way mark on the tank.

The aros should be pretty safe but I've seen pics posted of aros being eaten by RTCs. Make sure you keep the RTC well fed.
