RTC discoloration

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You say "normally eats raw shrimp" ... what does that mean exactly? Are you giving feeders? Your water parameters are very important for diagnosing the problem. Things as simple as Sudden water temperature changes can cause these guys to go on a hunger strike...still wouldn't explain the color change being SOOO Drastic... With what you've told us so far I'm leaning towards parasite. More information would be needed but thats where my hunch lays

Although hi levels in any of the params will cause this as well with RTC's

Frozen shrimp that is. I will have the water checked again. This is him now...
If your getting your water checked... I guess that means you don't own a test kit...if you plan on keeping big cats it's one of the things you need to purchase as they are extremly sensitive to their water contitions. ;)

My 4 inch RTC/TSN does this every so often,he will go 2-3 days with out eating, turn a lighter color, then after the 3rd day he eats fine and his color comes back,i have been feeding him raw shrimp and he will eat cichlid sticks.I have also noticed that he will breath harder while this is happening.

Im leaning towards a ph crash, looks like the barbels are starting to curl and shrivel, get the water params up as soon as possible, then you can get the answers you need.

This doesn't sound right to me, sounds like you are getting a rise in something (probably ammonia) to upset it, and have it breathing hard like you say, maybe after a heavy feed levels are rising then levels go back to normal after a few days.:)

My Hybrids will do it as well... no water param issues... simply a stress related issue with them anyway

If my fish, or any for that matter was breathing hard I'd say there was a problem.:)

The Hybrid TSN x RTC Seems to have moments of panic (Being man made we don't know what the cross breeding has done to their mental state...) I have one that nothing gets to and another that a light turns on in the house next door and he freaks out

My RTC does change colors with the length of time that the lights are on... the longer I leave them on ... the darker he gets LOL
