I just always try to use titanium now for large catfish. They are too curious for thier own good.

Not as scary as electocuting yourself. We have 240Volts AC (Alternating Current) at 50/60Hz over here so a zap often kills. During a water change my arm was in the tank and there was some water spillage onto the light below (different tier). I could actually feel the electrical shock surge and travel up my arm before the emergency safety breaker cut off the power. I still have bad dreams about the feeling but it was lucky all the same.
Hope your RTC comes out of it O.k. Another option besides the pvc heater guard is the Visitherm Stealth line of heaters. They claim to be "unbreakable" and have a safety shut-off.

The stealths are plastic coating a ceramic core. When they first came out, the rep. came by and SLAMMED one on the ground, he then handed it to me and said "here you go....unbreakable." That was four years ago and the heater has never had any problems. If they ever do malfunction, they stop working completely, they don't boil your tank. They are also guaranteed for life.
Yeah I had a shocking expierience that led me to go for titanium in my ponds and soon in all my tanks. I couldn't see that the heater was broken in my 350 gal pond one day, and the running light was on like normal. So I went to reach my hand in to do a water change and vacum some poop up off the bottom. Zap! I jerked my hand back, it just felt kinda like I had a twitch in my arm and I thought nothing of it. I put my hand back in the water and nothing. So I continued cleanin around the edge and when I got to the other side zap again this time my toes crunched under my foot. I knew it was electricity then. I looked and sure enough the heater was broken. I then noticed that all the catfish were in one side of the tank cowering. So I put my hand back in the water beside them and again nothing, but on the other side I got shocked. So to test it out more I got my roomate, and told him to grab a rock out since I was rearranging the ones on the other side. He jumped and screamed, and was like what the hell was that. It was really funny. That's when i noticed the broken heater. So I guess maybe the electricity follows the water current? I've never been able to explain why there was current on one side of the pond and not the other? All the fish were fine though, just wouldn't move from that spot for a day or so. Crazy huh? They have titaniums in both my 350 gal and my 1100 gal. I don't enjoy getting electric shock treatments unwillingly lol.
