RTC friendly debate thread!

Just to put my 2 cents in. i would say for the most part as long as the tank was 2-3x as long as the fish at adult size and atleast 2x wide then it should be good for life. I do agree with the bigger is better though.

On the other hand. What would you say about someone who rescued an RTC from a bad home and put it in lets say a 240 at about a foot long. i know most people NEED to plan ahead with these fish but when you dont plan and its a " my tank is to small but WAY better than its current tank". im currently in that situation. i had a buddy who had an RTC about 8" in a 55 gal. didnt have a bigger tank nor did he have plans for a bigger tank. so i took him and actually sold alot of my fish to house this RTC as long as possible in a 240

I really don't see a problem with housing a rtc properly at the present. When the fish starts to outgrow its tank then deal with it. Its not like a 2 foot rtc is going to outgrow its tank overnight. As for the hormones in the water, I don't know if that is real or not. I know that if you are doing enough water changes to take care of the fish it won't be a problem anyway.

Go with a 5' width

The footprint just doesn't seem big enough to me. Though I haven't kept an rtc the 34" niger I used to have would make full use of the 10' x 4.5' footprint of my pond.

Let's see some pictures of 10 years or so old rtcs and their corresponding size. I would be curious to see how many get to be 4 foot, and what age that should be expected. Everybody knows what they do in their first 2-3 years but it doesn't seem like anybody has experience with senior fish. I am still being friendly here, just looking for more info to add to the pool.

i agree ^^^^ id like o see some home aquarium RTC that are around the 10yrs??? i do have a RTC he is like 14" and he resides currently in a 600gal indoor pond but hes only 7 months or so mines doesnt qualify as above, but ya lets see some older cats that have been in HOME aquaria. i like this thread!

Great thread! I have a 9" RTC in a 65g but he will be going into 350g in the coming months. At this point, Bubba is comfortable and active. he loves his cave that I built for him and is very happy. I am looking forward to putting him in the larger tank with a couple of niger cats.

Can anyone post pics of really large RTCs in a home aquarium 600-1000g? I would like to see what the OP is aiming for.

hmmm.. suppose we could get some input from Johnptc? or is that big RTC that he's got a hybrid? i think it is.. i think it's an RTCxTSN.

While the thread is about RTCs I think that anybody housing a huge cat especially a hybrid RTC would have valuable information about tank size.

fishtown usa in ramsey nj has a rare-what looks like albino rtc-if I had to guess it is roughly almost 3 ft long and thick, but is in a 300 gallon rubbermaid pond-looks too small for the poor guy-he is beautiful though! anyone from the area know what I'm talking about? :)
