RTC gill color?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Brown gills usually means brown-blood disease aka nitrite poisoning (methemoglobinemia). It's the result of long-term poor maintenance. It can be reversed if it's not in a latent stage where the fish no longer has any healthy red blood cells. We have marrow to produce new red blood cells. Fish blood cells are nucleated and must divide to produce new red blood cells. If the RTC has any normal red blood cells left, it can recover. But, it takes time and rigorous maintenance/aeration to help it towards restored health.

good water changes and water quality will correct this. If there are currently nitrites reading aquarium salt can help protect against the effects of nitrite

Any updates on how the little guy is doing?

Any updates on how the little guy is doing?

I went ahead and moved him to my pond a couple of days ago and it looks like that is working. I checked his gills today and saw a nice ring of pink on the outside and they appear to be lighter. I assume that means they are repairing themselves? He is swimming around like crazy, but that could be because he has 100 times more space than he had before.

RTCs are very active cats. The two I had only sat still right after they ate. Glad to hear his health is on the up side of the hill! Keep us posted
