Wow, very high ammonia...water changes and a vacuum into your gravel would help cool off the ammonia a lot. I'd do a 50% water change in my opinion.
A heavy filtration with active carbon also seems to help in most of my cases.

Allready dne 50% water change and gravel is clean thats why im puzzled, im now doin 10% water change each day to try drop the amonia levels. This really has me stumped

Could something have killed your BB in your sump?(Powerfaillure at night?)
This can change all parameters within several hours...

I'd say keep up with (larger) waterchanges, to get your parameters back on the map. I do 50% weekly, allthough I have a huge sump, compared to my tank size.

What is the pH in your tank? I am currently working with my pond to raise pH and hardness because I began to see ammonia show up on tests. Since Bb don't work as well (or at all) in the lower ranges of pH (mine shows at 6, but that's as low as the tests go, so who knows, really) it can cripple the biological filter. If you have low pH, this could be the culprit. Also, you have a LOT of fish in this tank. Could it be that the system which supports biological filtration was enough, but is no longer, because the fish just keep growing and pooping?

Strangly enough my ph is at 6 also but i thought if i raised the ph using chems then it would make the amonia highly toxic?

There is only 9 fish in this tank, 2 of which im trying to rehome, yeah i get what ur saying as they are big fish.

To the earlier reply, we never have power cuts here in the uk, not very often anyway.

I need a simple solution to my prob, ive never used chems b4 untill now, im using waterlife poolshield declorinator and waterlife bacterlite freindly bacteria. should i be using these products or not?

I don't think the water polisher is going to help you. The beneficial bacteria might, depending on if it's a crap product or not. There are only a few of these Bb-in-a-bottle that actually work.

Try reading here about pH and water hardness.

You don't need to add any chemicals in order to fix the pH problem. A mix of 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1 teaspoon marine salt mix, 1 tablespoon epsom salt per 20 gallons will raise hardness and pH. You're looking for a pH around 7. This article explains this, and why the Bb isn't living anymore, and how to add this solution so that it does not stress your fish -- you'll only do enough for 25% of the volume every few days.

Sorry I see you said dechlorinator and not water polisher... LOL definitely use dechlorinator, no matter what's going on in the tank.

Interesting...I think it would be a good time for a quarantine tank before it spreads to your other fish. Who knows...

Problems are most likely related to water quality... it will spread to his other fish anyway, unless he fixes water quality in the main tank. Therefore, a qt won't help (and would be a huge tank -- if he had one of those, he'd probably have the stock split between the two anyway).

I think i might be making slight progress guys, i done a 50% water change last night added the freindly bacteria and declorinator and this morn the amonia level has dropped to 4.0, still not good enough but all the same its a result. The ph is also rising, 6.6 now, just need the bb to start munching on that amonia as there is no sign on nitrites yet.

I think another week and it could be sorted, my rtc's gill curl seems to hzve stopped dead in its tracks also, so there's still hope on the horison. As for qt tank, erm nope, my pond is still in very early stages and no where near ready for fish. I think the ulsers my rtc has in his mouth were caused by something i fead him, not sure what yet though but im suspecting chunks of trout :( could be wrong but all this started a few days after feeding the trout. anyway i will keep u guys informed of all progress but because im using my phone, it might take a while to reply to posts.

I think I would do as many 50% water changes as I could. Like once a day or every other day instead of waiting a week. You're giving the tank a whole week for the toxins to build back up.

Also, when using dechlorinater, you should be dosing for the entire size of the tank, not just the water being replaced. Unless you're premixing in buckets. Your fish may be suffering from the chlorine in the water.
