RTC help red gills

Changing the water today doesn't tell us why this happened. Did you lag in tank maintenance ?

I would guess its your water conditions , your bichir was breathing abnormally and then died now your rtc is showing red around the gills.what are your exact parameters, white flesh turning red is sometimes an indicator of amonia poisoning

Well I am going to get a new test kit and an alert strip. I did a water change last night and he is no longer red and eating like a pig again.

It is now even more clear that this is a case of lack of maintenance. You should be doing regular water changes, at the very least, and keeping up with your filter cleaning as well. Good luck.
