I belive that it's mostly a question of perception. Very Very few people can accurately judge size visually without a frame of referance. Another factor is that BIG tends to look HUGE when you add in the element of surprise...

I seriously doubt any real 12' long catfish have been found. In fact even the mythical 6' redtails are rare.... Remember that one picture thats drug up every time this topic comes up? of the RTC caught in a river? Besides bieng grossly overweight and about 20 years old (the picture) it was at BEST 4 1/2 feet long. 6' may well be possible but theres no way I'll ever belive its common.
The guy in the story probubly read something on the internet that was intended to say 18" and was typed out as 18'... what usually happens next is someone else comments..."Damn...I'll bet that thing could eat PEOPLE..." Before long it's floating around as an internet myth and passed along by morons in LFS's
