by the sound of it that lfs doesnt deserve your $40

cloudy eyes, gill curl + ick

bypass

OP says it was a trade in, meaning the LFS did not make it like that, came in that way. RTC's are pretty good at pulling around. They get to looking bad quick, but pull around quickly too.

Maybe talk him down in price, in order to buy supplies and the right food? That way, youre still spending the money in his place. (food and chemicals are higher mark up anyway, so he would actually make out better in the long run)
I dunno... just an idea.

I like that idea... :)

Id pass i have a 20" clown knife with a funny gill at one side because the 40" RTC it was with in its old tank before it was brought into the fish store i work at tried to eat it and it was 2/3 in its mouth when the bloke pulled it out.
But ye id pass it sounds very very messed up, i know its difficult to see an animal like that which looks doomed and you want to help it but its best to leave it.

I don't understand what the clown knife has to do with this subject? It wasn't real smart of you to have a knife half the size of your RTC together... anyone on here that knew RTC's would have told you that was tempting fate.
Dragonfish obviously has the room for it...

So Dragon, its really up to you. If you want an RTC I think this would be a good opportunity to own one, its going to have the same, if not slightly better chance at survival than if you bought a 2-3" juvi RTC to growout, as its larger, thus more stable, and all the things you mentioned can be turned around pretty simply. Its just weather or not you feel like putting the time and effort into it.

Heres an RTC that was at an LFS, first two was when it first came in, third is after a few weeks. By then most all the amonia burn had healed and the eyes had began to clear up. Whiskers had already grown back, and fins had begun to heal, although short they looked much better.

I was wondering if the eyes were from a burn. They say they sold the cat originally a few months ago to the guy and it had gill curl then. Guy supposedly had big enough tank for the size but just realized he can't keep it much longer. Sounds like the people who caused me to rescue the pacus. It is hard not to want io help the animal out so it doesn't end up in a 55 for the rest of it's short miserable life.

Went back yesterday to see how it was doing. The guy tells me he didn't have space in the QT for it so he just added salt to its tank(central system)and the next day it was completely cured so he sold it to someone. I am now on the lookout for this miracle salt.

I highly doubt that it was completely healed! Your lfs is full of a little bs if you don't mind me saying so. Those are severe ammonia burns. The skin might have started to cover it a little, but it would take weeks for the skin and whiskers to grow back. I know first hand. I use to specialize in getting lfs to sell me catfish in that kind of condition for super cheap. I hope the new owner knows what he/she is getting into and what kind of commitment it will take to get that fish super healthy and growing again!
